Mama told me when I was young Come sit beside me, my only son And listen closely to what I say And if you do this It will help you some sunny day Oh take your time, don’t live too fast Troubles will come and they will pass Go find a woman and you’ll find love And don’t forget son There is someone up above And be a simple kind of man Oh be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man Oh won’t you do this for me son if you can? Forget your lust for the rich man’s gold All that you need is in your soul And you can do this if you try All that I want for you my son Is to be satisfied And be a simple kind of man Oh be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man Oh won’t you do this for me son if you can? Oh yes I will Oh don’t you worry, you’ll find yourself Follow your heart and nothing else And you can do this oh baby, if you try All that I want for you my son Is to be satisfied And be a simple kind of man Oh be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man Oh won’t you do this for me son if you can? The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd
Excitement spread through the auditorium as the house lights dimmed and the rebel flag covered the entire back of the stage. The roar of the crowd overwhelmed the words, ” Throughout high school, the band learned what they could from each other and by listening to the radio, being influenced by country standards, classic Southern blues and the new British rock sounds. Really impressed with the British sound as well as the rock image, the longhaired students soon ran afoul of the school authorities, namely one coach Leonard Skinner.
By , they all dropped out of school — broke and unemployed — but remained dedicated to their music. As one last dig at their old gym coach, the band introduced themselves one night as Leonard Skinner — the name, after going through several versions, stuck as Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Street Survivors in Everything seemed to be going perfectly for Skynyrd.. They were on top of the world and on the road to becoming one of the most successful and iconic bands of all time which they did anyways.. On Thursday, October 20, , just three days after the release of Street Survivors, and five shows into their most successful headlining tour to date, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s chartered Convair ran out of fuel near the end of their flight from Greenville, South Carolina, where they had just performed at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium, to LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Though the pilots attempted an emergency landing on a small airstrip, the plane crashed in a forest in Gillsburg, Mississippi. Following the crash and the ensuing press, Street Survivors became the band’s second platinum album and reached 5 on the U. The single “What’s Your Name” reached 13 on the single airplay charts in January The original cover sleeve for Street Survivors had featured a photograph of the band, particularly Steve Gaines, engulfed in flames.
Out of respect for the deceased and at the request of Teresa Gaines, Steve’s widow , MCA Records withdrew the original cover and replaced it with a similar image of the band against a simple black background. Collins, Rossington, Powell and Pyle performed the song with Charlie Daniels and members of his band.
From , the remaining members took a break, and some pursued other projects, such as the Rossington-Collins band, Vision, and the Artimus Pyle Band.. Allen Collins’, life was pretty much ruled with tragedy after the crash, and after so much had happened, he crashed his car while drunk, killing his girlfriend and paralyzed himself from the neck down..
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Simple man lyrics
The people were drawn there by the glittering promise that had been glimpsed for years earlier at the Woodstock festival, the promise of a world guided by the rock and roll spirit into a better future. It was a myth whose power was shaken almost immediately by the decable at Altamont, and taken apart piece by piece in the ensuing years of political repression. The Watkins Glen gathering was one of the few to come off relatively smoothly in the wake of Woodstock, but the ensuing years had turned the innocence of Woodstock Nation into a hackneyed set of rituals.
The uninspired performances at the Glen, particularly by an Allman Brothers band left emotionally shattered by the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, left no doubt that the event marked the end of an era. So when Kooper boasted that he was sitting on a band that was going to be the next Rolling Stones, it was not hard to build up at least some curiosity to see what he was talking about.

This is great music for budding guitarists to play along to, and some of their songs are just great. Of course, skip the woefully overplayed ‘Freebird’ and ‘Sweet home Alabama’. Published What a comprehensive collection. Can’t get much better than this! Anyway, fate is capricious. My favourites are of course “Freebird” studio and live versions but “Simple Man” is a moving song about values passed on to Ronnie by his momma. And of course “Sweet Home Alabama” is a classic that has almost become a cliche.
The tragic Skynyrd story has been told countless times, and the group’s legendary whiskey rock ‘n’ roll has been re-issued over the years via numerous compilation recordings. The Esssential Lynyrd Skynyrd captures the swamp rock with a total of twenty-five songs. The retrospective was subsequently re-issued in by Geffen Records under the Gold title. The rebel flag wavin’ “Sweet Home Alabama” opens The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd, which sets the tone for the entire collection of blue collar swamp rock, that aptly closes with an intense, thirteen-minute live recording of “Free Bird”.
Sandwiched between the signature bookend tracks, the remaining songs from The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd translate the genius of Skynyrd during their prime. With the take-no-shit Van Zant out front, backed by a tenacious three guitar assault, a locked-down rhythem section, plus Billy Powell’s piano fills, Skynyrd ruled the South until the night of October 20th, , when the group’s plane crash-landed near McComb, Mississippi.
Foreigner + Gun = Prison. It’s really quite simple.
History[ edit ] Early years [ edit ] In Jacksonville, Florida during the summer of , Ronnie Van Zant , Bob Burns , and Gary Rossington became acquainted while playing on rival baseball teams and decided to jam together one afternoon after Burns was injured by a ball hit by Van Zant. Liking what they heard, they immediately decided to form a band. They soon approached guitarist Allen Collins , though Collins initially fled on his bicycle and hid in a tree at the sight of Van Zant pulling into his driveway.
Collins was soon convinced that Van Zant meant him no harm and he agreed to join the fledgling band.
With everlasting hits such as “Simple Man,” “Gimme Three Steps,” “What’s Your Name,” “Call Me The Breeze,” “You Got that Right,” and more, Rolling Stone named Lynyrd Skynyrd one of its Greatest Bands of All Time.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Simple Man Lyrics
Since many in the group had never been to the USA before, and as I was their American host, I showed them around the city, and we ended up in a large outlet mall for some shopping. What was the highlight of their trip? The group went inside and immediately went to the guns and shooting department… Where they stood, fascinated and dumbstruck, looking at the huge array of guns available I would guess, perhaps models on display. The fascination was understandable.
You see, in Singapore, private gun ownership is illegal, and very strictly enforced.
In interviews, King has said that during the night following the practice session, the chords and two main guitar solos came to him in a dream, note for note. King then introduced the song to the band the next day. The track was recorded at Studio One in Doraville, Georgia , using just King, bassist Wilkeson, and drummer Burns to lay down the basic backing track. King used a Marshall amp belonging to Allen Collins.
The guitar used on the track was a Fender Stratocaster. King has said that the guitar was a pretty poor model and had bad pickups, forcing him to turn the amp up all the way to get decent volume out of it. The famous “Turn it up” line uttered by Ronnie Van Zant at the beginning was actually not intended to be in the song. Van Zant was simply asking producer Al Kooper and engineer Rodney Mills to increase the volume in his headphones so that he could hear the track better.
Young sing about her”. In the left channel, you can hear the phrase ” Southern Man ” being sung lightly approximately at 0: This was producer Al Kooper doing a Neil Young impression and was just another instance of the band members amusing themselves in the studio while being recorded. But Van Zant insisted that Kooper remove it, not wanting to plagiarize or upset Young. Following the two “woos” Wilkeson’s, the first; King’s, the second at the start of the piano solo at approximately 4: Jimmy Carter got the answer.

Lynyrd Skynyrd Listen now Let’s be honest: By this point in time, we’ve all heard Sweet Home Alabama so many times that every lick, lead and lyric—from the open-string single-note fills that punctuate the chord progression, to the digs at Neil Young and the “guv’nor”—is burned into our collective unconscious. And despite the sheer cultural massiveness of the song, it must be pointed out that “Alabama” is not even Lynyrd Skynyrd ‘s most well-known tune—an honor that belongs to the similarly overplayed Free Bird.
Lynyrd Skynyrd’s reputation was built on the road. Before the band ever committed a single note of their music to tape, they had played over 1, shows. in , their appetite to bring their music to their people remains undiminished.
Whether it’s chopped, bobbed, or bored, metric to ‘Merican, he rides ’em all. He strokes the strings of his Gibson Explorer with surgical precision, working the neck with blinding fury as he leads the guitar assault of rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd. The crowd roars its approval with sonic blasts from the motorcycles parked right below the stage and throughout the Wolfman Jack Amphitheater, people singing along with every song, the words wringing out long lost memories while bringing out the flood of emotions that go along with them.
Skynyrd plays into the night, filling the South Dakota plains with a fever of songs and melodies to the crowd afflicted with adulation. Bikers love Skynyrd, and Skynyrd loves them back. Best part is, this scene we had the pleasure of being a part of last year will soon repeat itself. Hearing one of their tunes on the radio is like running across a long lost friend. Medlocke has done two stints with the band. He grew up with the guys in the same musical arena of Jacksonville, Florida, and pounded drums for them when they first hit the scene in Medlocke grew up in a musical background.

Some folks cheat and some folks lie I can judge a man by the look in his eyes So don’t hand me Jack and try to call it Cola I know the difference ‘tween shit and shinola I was born in the sweet hot Florida sunshine Good lookin’ women backwoods and moonshine Learned more about life on the streets than in the school Sweet Mama didn’t raise no.
They defined the genre in its Seventies heyday and beyond, and both bands are still active entities. But whereas the Allmans were deeply steeped in blues and jazz, Lynyrd Skynyrd more freely embraced rock. Their three-guitar lineup gave them an uncommon musical muscle, while their down-to-earth songs spoke plainly and honestly from a working-class Southerner’s perspective. Theirs is one of the most dramatic tales in rock history. The saga of Lynyrd Skynyrd has unfolded in an almost mythical series of ups and downs, from being in the vanguard of a musical movement to the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of three band members.
From the ashes, the survivors re-formed a decade later, and what started as a tribute turned into a full-fledged renaissance. It all began in Jacksonville, Florida, where a teenaged Ronnie Van Zant got turned on to several kinds of music: He was floored by the Rolling Stones, vowing to form a group that would be their American equivalent.
From the start Lynyrd Skynyrd has been a standard-bearer for Southern rock, but their biggest early influences were British – the Stones, the Yardbirds, Cream, Free and Led Zeppelin – and some of those bands’ controlled frenzy seeped into even their most Dixie-fied material. Having grown their hair long, they were given school suspensions and endless grief by a high-school gym teacher named Leonard Skinner. They solved the problem by dropping out and moving to a cabin in Green Cove Springs, south of Jacksonville.
