Moraines are sedimentary deposits that mark the past extents of glaciers. Since glaciers respond sensitively to climate, especially at high latitudes and high altitudes, the timing of glacial fluctuations marked by moraines can help scientists to better understand past climatic variations and how glaciers may respond to future changes. In the tropics, glacial scientists commonly use beryllium surface exposure dating.

The Ice Age and the Genesis Flood

Glacials are colder phases within an ice age in which glaciers advance; glacials are separated by interglacials. Thus, the end of the last glacial period, which was about 11, years ago, is not the end of the last ice age since extensive year-round ice persists in Antarctica and Greenland. Over the past few million years the glacial-interglacial cycles have been “paced” by periodic variations in the Earth’s orbit via Milankovitch cycles.

The last glacial period is the best-known part of the current ice age, and has been intensively studied in North America, northern Eurasia, the Himalaya and other formerly glaciated regions around the world. The glaciations that occurred during this glacial period covered many areas, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere and to a lesser extent in the Southern Hemisphere. Our objectives were, Holistic geological descriptions of the topography, sedimentology and geomorphology of the prominent ice-cored moraines; Interpretation of the character and behaviour of those glaciers while they were at this relatively advanced position, and; Quantification of the geometric changes to these glaciers during the Late Holocene. The Ulu Peninsula comprises large areas of Cretaceous sandstone and mudstone, overlain by multiple layers of basalt and hyaloclastite.

Radiocarbon dates on organic remains on James Ross Island suggest that the Ulu Peninsula became ice-free following the Last Glacial Maximum by around years ago, with a glacial readvance that finished around years ago. Ulu Peninsula has several small cirque glaciers with pronounced ice-cored moraines, which relate to a more recent glacier readvance.

New study determines more accurate method to date tropical glacier moraines

Devonian Relics Earth Sculpted by Ice: Near the end of the Devonian Period some million years ago – long before Earth’s Ice Ages – Illinois, as well as much of the Midwestern United States, was at the bottom of a shallow sea teeming with life. It offers, in particular, facilities for much easier data processing and constitutes a major improvement and potential replacement for the mechanical Schmidt-hammer. However, its different approach to the measurement of surface hardness – based on Q- velocity values instead of R- rebound values – is a potential drawback. This difference effectively means that measurements from the two instruments are not easily interconvertible and, hence, that the instruments cannot be used interchangeably without previous comparative tests of both instruments under field conditions.

Both instruments used in this comparative study were N-type models with identical impact energy of 2. To compare both instruments and explore interconvertibility, parallel measurements were performed on a selected number of boulders 10 boulders per site with 5 impacts each, at least 2 sites per moraine on moraines of homogeneous lithology but different established ages covering the entire Holocene and the Late Glacial.
